When Titans shaped Azeroth, they used the Pillars of Creation. These artifacts were found by Night Elves and used during the War of the Ancients to close Burning Legion portals. But Night Elf Illidan Stormrage seemingly sided with the Legion, receiving fiery eyes and rad tattoos from Sargeras himself. Labelled Betrayer, Illidan was imprisoned for ten thousand years.
Sargeras promised Orc Shaman Gul'dan power to lead the Legion. After invading, Gul'dan raised the Broken Isles from the sea, found the Tomb of Sargeras, but was killed by demons instead, his skull becoming a demonic artifact. Illidan, a sucker for power and foolish bargains, consumed the Skull of Gul'dan, becoming half-demon, and made a deal with Kil’jaeden for even more power to kill the Lich King. ignored the deal to train demon hunters and rule Outland, then got beat up by the Lich King's champion anyway. He returned to Outland only to be killed by Maiev Shadowsong.
Anyway, after Garrosh used some never-confusing time travel, Gul'dan of this alternate timeline helped Archimonde plan a new invasion. Defeated, Archimonde transported this Gul'dan to the Broken Isles of the main timeline. Here he found Illidan's body, reopened the Tomb of Sargeras, and created portals for the Burning Legion. And you'd better find those Pillars of Creation if you hope to stop him.
